Black baton with silver fittings with an acanthus leaves motif; conical body made of dark, French-polished wood; grip fitting rounded on top; at 2/5 of the length, a silver ring with an engraved inscription; rounded tip fitting; all silver parts adorned with an engraved acanthus leaves motif. Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1898, silversmith’s mark “J.C” in an oval field. As per inscription, the baton was presented to the conductor (?) E. Greenwood in April 1909 by the adult friends of the Band of Hope choir in Laygate (probably a quarter in the city of South Shields in Great Britain)
