an ivory baton with brass fittings; the conic core was made of ivory; the fitting of the grip widens and was filled with rounded black mass (lacquer?); on the sides of the fittings, an inscription was engraved and a convex filigree string in the shape of a garland was attached; the baton has  brass tip with a delicate garland engraving; at 2/5 of the length, a flat and wide ring was fixed with an inscription and a plaque with the coat of arms of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis (a three-mast ship at sea) with an inscription. According to the inscription, the baton was presented on behalf of the residents of the city by the mayor of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, T.H. Williams, and a city official R.N. Howard, to the conductor W.W. Davenport of the HMS Endymion “as a memento of the admirable way in which he conducted the combined bands of the channel fleet in the public gardens on 23 August 1895.”
